TONY NEWTON

Bass
Matt Pearce on Tony Newton

Tony Newton, bass player, songwriter, producer, engineer, mixer, footballer, cookie eater, the man we call the GL, the Glorious Leader. And that may be a humorous title, but we also all know that there wouldn’t be a Voodoo Six without his unswerving, dogged, relentless dedication to all things V6. I first met him in a London rock covers band called Metalworks, and he asked me if I fancied playing a few gigs with a band he’d just put together. ‘Oh yeah, where you playing?’ I asked, expecting some local club. ‘We’re supporting Iron Maiden at Hammersmith Apollo’ he replied. Jaw hits floor, one of best gigs of life follows. And that was my introduction to working with someone who makes things happen. Sometimes it’s annoying, working on a guitar solo that I’m convinced is extremely rocking, and then when I’m in his studio I get ‘Yeah, I like bits of it…’ But two hours work later, we have something 10 times better. Don’t ya just hate people who’re mostly right..? Makes you give him the benefit of the doubt the rest of the time, but I’m sure his bass doesn’t have to be THAT loud..? But I’m sure he thinks the same about my guitar… Stage Left is not for the fainthearted. And don’t get him started on the genius of Malcolm Young, unless you have a few hours to spare. But yet again, he’s right…
